Twee jaar later zal een aardbeving hier niet veel van overeind laten staan. De foto werd genomen vanaf Kearny Street in de richting van de "Old Saint Mary's Cathedral" (achter het "California Hotel" ) die, net als overige gebouwen, na de aardbeving getroffen werd door brand, veroorzaakt door defect geraakte hoofdgasleidingen na de aardbeving, maar is toch behouden. Anders is het voor de in 1862 nieuw geopende "Grace Cathedral" afgelopen, van deze op de hoek met de Stockton street staande kerk is niets meer over maar is hier nog met moeite te ontwaren tussen de linker gevelrij en de telegraafpaal. Stapsgewijs is er aan de overkant, voor bij het "Fairmont Hotel", hier rechts achteraan, een nieuwe "Grace Cathedral" gebouwd.
